The obverse side of the coin features the image of one of Mexico’s greatest heroes, Don Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla. Costilla, formerly a pastor, was the leader of a group of civilians that fought in the Mexican War for Independence. He became a martyr for the people as he was executed by firing squad. On the reverse side of the coin is Mexico’s National Coat of Arms. This image recreates the scene the Aztecs came upon where they witnessed a Mexican Gold Eagle with a rattlesnake in its mouth. They believed this was a sign that told them this was where they needed to build their great city. That city became Mexico City. Here is the eagle standing on a cactus using its beak and claws to subdue the snake. Above the image is ‘ESTRADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS’ which means the United States of Mexico.
