Junk Silver Halves are so named because for collectability, there is nothing special about the designs since they make so many and often keep the design for many years. The coins aren’t really junk though since these halves are made before 1965 which means they have a quantity of silver in them. This is why collectors buy these coins for their collections or portfolios.
The U.S. Mint started minting half-dollars as far back as 1794. For most of those years these coins honored Lady Liberty with designs showing her in various poses. From 1948-1963 they featured Ben Franklin. Since 1964 they have used the image of President John F. Kennedy and a classic heraldic eagle design on the reverse side. After 1965 the quantity of silver in these coins was reduced to 40% and in 1971 it was eliminated altogether.
Buying one of these coins is buying a piece of history and these 90% Silver Halves are a great way to add some silver to your portfolio or collection.
