Percival Norton Johnson started the business in 1817 in London, England. Under Johnson’s tutelage they started out as a gold assayers shop. It grew into the company Johnson Matthey with the addition of George Matthey in 1851. They earned the status of an Official Assayer & Refiner to the Bank of England only one year later. Today, Johnson Matthey, the purveyor of precious metals is no more as they sold the business to Japan’s Asahi Ltd. This means whatever remains of Johnson Matthey bars is all there will be.
