The Indian Head Cent was first designed in by James Barton Longacre 1858 and was later minted and ran from 1859-to 1909. This coin was very popular during its circulation as the price of the metals that composed the coin rose from time to time namely copper and nickel. At times people were hoarding these coins but in 1877 the demand was the lowest as the economy was very poor that year. Consequently, the 1877 Indian Head Cent is the rarest of these coins.
The obverse side of the coin features a Native American in a headdress facing left. The image is very detailed and you can make out the markings on the headdress and see the feathers in great detail. Arching above this image is ‘UNITED STATES OF AMERICA’. Below the image is ‘1877’.
On the reverse side of the coin is a shield with an oak wreath around it. In the middle is ‘ONE CENT’. Below the image are words that weren’t on the original design-’ONE ADVP OUNCE .999 COPPER’.
The Indian Head Cent is a great homage to a popular coin from the history of coins. You get a quality coin with a wonderful design that not only adds some great quality copper to your portfolio but looks great in your collection. Be sure to get yours today.
