The Morgan Design, at a Round’s Price

The Morgan dollar is one of the most collected US coin designs, and antique examples carry premiums to match. Golden State Mint’s version puts the same Liberty and eagle artwork on a plain one ounce silver round, at a bullion round’s price.

The Coin Behind the Round

The Morgan silver dollar, first struck in 1878, ran until 1904 and returned for a single year in 1921. George T. Morgan, an engraver who trained in England before joining the US Mint, gave it a left-facing Liberty on the obverse and a heraldic eagle on the reverse. This round carries both.

A Round, Not a Morgan Dollar

This is a private-mint round, not a coin. It has no face value, it is not legal tender, and it is not a Morgan dollar. Where an original carries a denomination, this rim carries the weight, the fineness and the Golden State Mint name. You are buying George T. Morgan’s artwork on one ounce of .999 fine silver, priced on the metal and not on rarity.

Why It Stacks Well

Set the history aside and it is one full troy ounce of .999 fine silver from an established US mint. At 39 mm it fits standard round tubes and capsules, and because it is bullion there is no date, mint mark or grade to sort through. The .999 purity also makes it eligible for a precious metals IRA.

Specifications

The round measures 39 mm across, the standard diameter for a one ounce silver round, and contains one troy ounce of .999 fine silver. It ships new from Golden State Mint, packed 500 to a mint box. Full details are on the Specifications tab.

GSM Morgan Round FAQ

Is the GSM Morgan round a real Morgan silver dollar?

No. It is a private-mint round with no face value and no legal tender status. It reproduces George T. Morgan’s design, but it is not the coin.

How is it different from an antique Morgan dollar?

An antique Morgan is a 90 percent silver US coin whose price also reflects its date, mint mark and condition. This round is one troy ounce of .999 fine silver, valued on its metal, with nothing rarer to chase.

Who is GSM?

GSM is Golden State Mint, a long-running private mint in the United States that strikes silver rounds and bars.

Is the GSM Morgan round IRA eligible?

Yes. At one troy ounce of .999 fine silver it clears the fineness a precious metals IRA requires, and our Specifications tab lists it as IRA eligible.

Does it fit standard tubes and capsules?

Yes. It is a 39 mm round, the common size for a one ounce silver round, so it drops into 39 mm capsules and standard round tubes.
