Engelhard first struck the 1 oz silver Prospector in 1982, and the kneeling gold panner on its face became one of the best-known private designs in American silver. This listing is the original Engelhard production, sourced from the secondary market, in random years. One troy ounce, .999 fine, with the Engelhard name struck into every piece.

 

A Prospector on One Side, the Engelhard Mark on the Other

The obverse shows a bearded prospector crouched in a shallow creek, hat brim pulled low and sleeves rolled up, tipping his pan into the current. U.S.A. sits in the upper field and THE AMERICAN PROSPECTOR curves along the bottom inside a beaded border. The reverse depends on the year. Engelhard used its Large E logo from 1982 through 1984, then switched to a bald eagle descending onto a branch from 1984 through 1987, so both designs exist for 1984. The reverse varies by year, and the date on your round decides which one you get.

 

The Refiner Behind the Name

Charles Engelhard Sr. founded the company in New Jersey in 1902, and it grew into one of the largest refiners of gold, silver and platinum in the world. The German chemical company BASF bought Engelhard in 2006. That history is why the name matters to stackers who have been at this a while, and it is why an Engelhard round can trade above a generic one.

 

Originals, Not the 2025 Revival

In August 2025, MKS PAMP and BASF announced that the Engelhard brand was coming back under license, and a new 1 oz Prospector round was part of that launch. The 2025 round keeps the kneeling prospector but puts the Engelhard E logo on the reverse, and it is a separate, current-production product. These are 1980s originals, produced by Engelhard during its first run of Prospectors.

 

What to Expect From a Secondary-Market Round

These rounds are decades old and have passed through other hands before reaching us, so we list the condition as used. Light toning, contact marks and handling wear are all normal for a round of this age, and no two arrive looking quite the same. The silver content doesn’t change, whatever the surface shows.

Is this the original Prospector or the 2025 revival?

The original. These rounds come from Engelhard’s 1980s production and trade on the secondary market. The 2025 revival, struck under license by MKS PAMP, is a different product with the E logo on the reverse.

 

Which year and reverse will I get?

You can’t choose either. Dates are random, and the reverse follows the date: early rounds carry the Large E logo, later rounds carry the eagle.

 

Is the Engelhard Prospector a coin?

No. It is a privately struck round, so it has no face value and is not legal tender. Its value is the silver it contains, plus whatever the Engelhard name adds on the secondary market.

 

Is the Engelhard Prospector IRA eligible?

Yes. At .999 fine silver, it meets the purity requirement for silver in a precious metals IRA.

 

What condition will my round be in?

Used, as you would expect from a round struck in the 1980s. Toning, contact marks and light wear are common and don’t affect the silver content.
