Captain Scarlett, Painted on Copper
Captain Scarlett is a pirate captain on five ounces of .999 fine copper, colorized in full on one side and left as bare struck copper on the other. The mintage is 5,000 pieces, and each round ships in a clear capsule.
The Captain at the Rail
She stands at her ship’s rail at sundown, a cutlass held low in her right hand and red hair blowing out from under a tricorn marked with a skull and crossbones. Her long dark coat is trimmed in gold, with a red sash knotted at the waist. A black skull-and-crossbones flag hangs in the rigging behind her, and a three-masted ship crosses the setting sun out on the water. The color fills the whole face, from the clouds down to the deck boards.
The Copper Side
Turn it over and the same captain turns up in profile, struck in relief in plain copper, her hair streaming back under the tricorn. A cutlass and an anchor cross behind her, and ornate scrollwork rings the rim. A banner across the bottom reads 5 AVDP OUNCES .999 CU. Neither side carries a date.
Avoirdupois, Not Troy
AVDP on that banner means avoirdupois, the ordinary ounce used on a kitchen scale, and lighter than the troy ounce used for gold and silver. Five avoirdupois ounces comes to about 142 grams. The copper inside is a small share of the price. Folks buy Captain Scarlett for the artwork, the color and the 5,000-piece run. The colorized side is the fragile part, so the capsule is the best place to keep it.
Captain Scarlett Specifications
Each round weighs five avoirdupois ounces in .999 fine copper, 65 mm in diameter, with color on one side only. It is privately struck, so it has no face value. The Specifications tab carries the full details.
