The Canadian Silver Maple Leaf has anchored the Royal Canadian Mint’s bullion program since 1988, when it became one of the first widely traded coins struck in .9999 fine silver, a purity standard that set the bar for government mints worldwide. This 1 oz coin still carries that standard today, backed by a $5 CAD face value from the Canadian government. One Design, Two Monarchs, Three Decades

The reverse hasn’t changed much across the decades: a single sugar maple leaf fills the field beneath the word CANADA, with FINE SILVER 1 OZ ARGENT PUR wrapped around the rim in both of Canada’s official languages. The obverse carries whichever monarch was reigning when your coin was struck: Queen Elizabeth II’s portrait on coins through 2023, in one of three effigies used across those decades, and King Charles III’s portrait on coins from 2024 onward. Coins from 2014 onward also add radial lines and a micro-engraved security mark, features that make modern Maples some of the hardest coins to counterfeit. Three Elizabeth II effigies appeared before Charles III’s, each a different sculptor’s work.

Whatever year and effigy the Mint has most available when your order ships is what you get, and a multi-coin order might mix Queen Elizabeth II and King Charles III coins together. The purity and weight standard holds regardless of which monarch is on the coin. The year ships at random, and specific-year requests aren’t accepted.

Will I get a Queen Elizabeth II or King Charles III coin?

Either. The Mint introduced the King Charles III effigy in 2024, and used Queen Elizabeth II’s before that, in three different portraits since 1988. This listing ships whichever year we have on hand. You cannot request a specific year or monarch.

Is the Canadian Silver Maple Leaf IRA eligible?

Yes. At .9999 fine, it clears the IRS’s .995 minimum for a precious metals IRA by a wide margin, the same rule that qualifies Canadian Maple Leafs generally. The purity margin is wide, so eligibility isn’t a close call.

Does this coin have a face value?

Yes, every Canadian Silver Maple Leaf carries a $5 CAD face value backed by the government, though the silver inside is worth more than that number stamped on the coin at any normal silver price. Face value is $5 CAD, not what the coin is worth.

What condition will my coin arrive in?

Brilliant Uncirculated, as struck by the Mint. Coins may show light handling marks from minting and shipping, which is normal for the series and doesn’t affect the silver content. Condition is Brilliant Uncirculated, the same as any Mint-fresh coin.

How much silver am I actually getting?

One full troy ounce of .9999 fine silver in every coin, the same purity and weight regardless of year or effigy. Only the design changes, never the silver content.
