James Earl Fraser’s Buffalo Nickel is the inspiration for this round by the Asahi Mint. This round is minted with high detail in 1oz of .999 bullion quality fine silver.

  • Minted by the Asahi  Mint
  • Diameter: 39mm

The coin commonly known as the buffalo nickel was released in 1913 and quickly became a hit design. James Earl Fraser set out to create a coin that captured the American frontier and the reception it received certainly shows that the people loved it. This design ran until 1938 when the coin was replaced with the Jefferson nickel. The design was replaced due to the fact that it was hard to create coins with it and it didn’t wear very well. Collectors still seek after the Buffalo nickel to add to their collection for the beautiful design and the nostalgia that it brings.

On the obverse side of the round is a stoic Native American looking to the right. This design has done a superb job capturing all the detail of this design from the feathers in his hair and the ties where the braid begins to the lines in his face where we see his lips pulled straight in a look of determination.  This is James Earl Fraser’s design which he created after having three different Native Americans sit as models. The resulting image is a combination of all three men. Above the image and to the left is ‘LIBERTY’. At the very bottom is the Asahi Mint’s mint mark.

The reverse side has an image of an American bison which is commonly referred to as a buffalo. This buffalo was inspired by a famous buffalo at the Bronx Zoo, “Black Diamond”. In the image, we can see the animal with its head lowered. The majesty of the beast is detailed from its massive size and horns that suggest danger to its beautiful curly hair around its head. The buffalo is a symbol of the old west as it was an important part of the Native Americans’ source of food and clothing but was seen as an impedance to the western expansion. This difference in ideas is what led to many battles between the early settlers and Native Americans. Above the image of the buffalo is ‘ONE TROY OUNCE’ and below is ‘.999 FINE SILVER’.

Asahi’s move into the Silver Round market with the release of their first Buffalo is as expected. I have been buying their serialized bars for years. Their Buffalo Round is of Excellent Quality and finish. It has a Mirrored Proof like finish with a “Frosted” Indian head and Buffalo. The coin has no jagged edges. The boarder has smooth non-jagged reeding. The overall quality is on par with Sunshine Mints Buffalo. I will be buying more and “Highly” recommend the Asahi Buffalo to any Bullion investor.

    My first Asahi Buffalo!

First I want to say Hero Bullion reminds me of one of the special forces guys I knew in Okinawa. Incredibly friendly, knowledgeable, fair. Integrity. But also fast! Fast to deliver. Whether that be fast to deliver compliments to those deserving, or help to in or assist in kicking the ass of your atogonists. That is a Hero to me.

Now, for the Asahi Buffalo. Honestly, I was let down. Perhaps my first just happened to be one of many others’ last. While yes, it probably did have a mirror finish at some point, it now has stains on the obverse..Front.

But, thank God it’s just a round, so, no harm, no foul. Make no mistake, I will be ordering more from my new BFF, Hero.

    Thanks guys!
