The obverse of these coins have one of two designs featuring Napoleon III. One design has Napoleon with nothing on his head while the other has him wearing a wreath of laurel leaves. In both designs, above his head is ‘NAPOLEON III’ and ‘EMPEREUR’. Below the image is ‘BARRE’, the name of the engraver. The bare-headed version of Napoleon appears on coins dated between 1852-1860 while the laurel-wreath version of Napoleon is seen on coins from 1961-1870.
On the reverse of these coins are either an ornate looking shield or intertwined laurels. Both designs have ‘EMPIRE FRANCAIS’ at the top. The shield design has a detailed shield with an eagle on it. To the left of it is ‘20’ and to the right is ‘FR’. Below this design is the year of issue. The laurel leaves design has laurel leaves that curve right and left. In the middle is ‘20 FRANCS’ with the issue date underneath. To the left of the date or below the wreath is a mintmark of ‘A’ or ‘BB’. At the edge of both designs is written ‘DIEU PROTEGE LA FRANCE’ in raised letters.
