The Liberty Head Half Eagle ran from 1839 to 1908, the longest production span of any American gold denomination, and it circulated through the Gold Rush, the Civil War, and the industrial expansion that followed. An About Uncirculated example shows only brief time in commerce, retaining nearly all its original detail and much of its mint luster. Each coin carries 0.2419 troy ounces of gold, which puts pre-1933 US gold within reach at a fraction of what a Double Eagle costs.
Key Features:
- Purity and Weight: 90% gold, 8.359 grams gross, 0.2419 oz actual gold weight
- Metal: Gold alloyed with copper for circulation hardness
- Obverse: Coroneted head of Liberty encircled by thirteen stars
- Reverse: Heraldic eagle with Union shield, olive branch, and arrows
The obverse presents Liberty facing left, her hair drawn back into a coiled bun with loose curls falling along her neck. A coronet across her brow reads LIBERTY, and thirteen six-pointed stars ring the field, seven to the left and six to the right. The date sits centered along the bottom rim. On an AU coin, wear appears only on the highest points, generally the hair above the brow and the topmost curls.
The reverse carries a heraldic eagle with wings spread and head turned left, a striped Union shield across its breast. Its talons grip an olive branch on one side and a bundle of arrows on the other. A scroll above the eagle’s head bears IN GOD WE TRUST, added to the denomination in 1866. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA arcs around the upper rim with FIVE D. along the base, flanked by raised dots.
Coins are sold as random dates, selected from available inventory, and arrive uncertified with light contact marks consistent with the grade. Designed by Christian Gobrecht, the type was struck across seven different mints during its run, so mintmarks vary.
More than a century old, nearly full detail intact, and priced well below the larger denominations. Order your AU Liberty Half Eagle today.
