The Koala With the P125 Mark

The 2024 1 oz Australian Silver Koala is one troy ounce of 99.99% pure silver from the Perth Mint, and it carries a mark most Koala years do not. Low on the reverse sits a P125 mintmark, struck for the Perth Mint’s 125th anniversary in place of the plain P. The 2024 coin also brings Dan Thorne’s portrait of King Charles III to the 1 oz Koala, after the 2023 coin’s memorial portrait of Queen Elizabeth II.

Up the Gum Tree

Ing Ing Jong’s 2024 design puts the koala on the trunk of a gum tree, looking out over its habitat. It clings with paws gripping the bark, its body turned toward you and its round face and wide nose looking straight out of the coin. Eucalyptus leaves spread from both sides of the tree. KOALA arcs across the top right, 2024 1oz 9999 SILVER follows the left rim, and the P125 mark sits beside the trunk at lower left.

Charles III on the Koala

Dan Thorne’s effigy faces left, the King bareheaded in a jacket and tie, with the initials DT tucked below the shoulder. CHARLES III and AUSTRALIA run around the top, and 1 DOLLAR sits along the bottom rim between two small dots. The $1 denomination makes it Australian legal tender, though the silver inside is worth far more.

Presented by the Perth Mint

Each coin is presented in a protective acrylic capsule, and each carries a micro-laser engraved letter that you need a magnifying glass to find, an authentication feature meant to make counterfeiting much harder. The Perth Mint set a maximum mintage of 300,000 for the 2024 1 oz and now lists the coin as no longer available, so remaining coins come from dealer stock.

What does P125 mean on the 2024 Koala?

It is a special mintmark marking the Perth Mint’s 125th anniversary. It replaces the usual P on the reverse, so the 2024 Koala carries P125 beside the gum tree.

Is the 2024 Koala the first with King Charles III?

Among the 1 oz silver Koalas, yes. The 2023 coin carried the Queen Elizabeth II memorial portrait, and the 2024 coin carries Dan Thorne’s effigy of King Charles III.

Who designed the koala on the 2024 coin?

Ing Ing Jong, the Perth Mint designer who also drew the mother and joey on the 2023 coin. The King’s portrait on the obverse is by Dan Thorne.

Is 300,000 the number of coins made?

It is the maximum the Perth Mint set for the 2024 1 oz. A cap is a ceiling on production, and the Mint’s product page does not give a final count.
