On the obverse side of the 2023 1/2 oz American Gold Eagle coin we see Liberty as designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. This design first appeared in 1907 on the $20 Gold Eagle and ran until 1933. This version of Liberty shows her facing the viewer and looks to be walking toward them. She is carrying a torch in her right hand and has an olive branch in the other. At her feet, we see Washington D.C. while the sun is coming up behind her. Surrounding Liberty are 50 stars. Above her head is ‘LIBERTY’. At the bottom of the coin is ‘2023’.

The reverse side of the coin has Jenny Norris’ new eagle design first introduced in 2021. This design features the eagle facing to the left. With great detail, we see the fine feathers on its head that change to bigger feathers on its neck area. The eagle stares off with its characteristic intensity. Above the eagle’s head is ‘UNITED STATES OF AMERICA’. Just below this text in a smaller font is the Latin phrase  ‘E PLURIBUS UNUM’ which means “From many, one.” Under this phrase is ‘IN GOD WE TRUST’. At the bottom of the coin is ‘25 DOLLARS’ and ‘1/2 oz FINE GOLD’.

I love my 1/2 oz AGE, I truly do not understand why the 1/2 oz isn’t more popular. It’s large enough to really feel gravity acting on it, and is still considerably less expensive than a full oz.
