On the obverse of this coin is Jody Clark’s famous effigy of Queen Elizabeth II wearing her royal diadem and royal jewelry. The queen looks especially regal and poised in this profile portrait commissioned by the Royal Mint in 2015. Written in an arch above her head is ‘Elizabeth II’. On her right shoulder are the letters ‘JC’, Jody Clark’s initials. Below the queen’s portrait is written, ‘1 Dollar’ which is the legal tender face value backed by the Australian Government.
The Reverse of the coin features the coin’s namesake, the Australian Kookaburra bird. This year’s design is by Perth Mint’s artist, Natasha Muhl. Muhl captures the bird perched on the edge of a bird bath. Behind the bath are agapanthus flowers, and the long luscious leaves can be seen under the edge of the bird bath. These agapanthus flowers are very popular flowers and the kookaburra bird or what is sometimes called the laughing kookaburra bird is synonymous with Australia. Above the scene is written ‘2022 1oz. 9999 Silver’ and ‘Kookaburra’. On one of the leaves under the bird bath are Natasha Muhl’s initials,‘NM’. Under the bird’s tail is the letter ‘P’, the mark of the Perth Mint.
The Perth Mint is considered one of the most trusted mints in the world going back to 1899 when it was first founded. The mint started as another location for the Royal Mint in England but later became Australia’s own mint. This mint with its wealth of experience has shown that they are masters of the traditional production of coins but have also shown the world that they can set trends with modern techniques like the use of color and gilding.
