The obverse side of the coin has Britannia clad in a breastplate and a helmet and wielding a trident in her right hand. In her left hand she has a shield with the Union flag and an olive branch. Arched above her is ‘2021 ½ oz 999.9 FINE GOLD’. Below the image is ‘NATHAN’ for Phillip Nathan, the artist. This coin has a few anti-counterfeiting measures such as a little trident to the left that changes to a padlock when you move the coin back and forth. As you move it, you also notice the waves look like they are moving. Another security feature is the tincture lines in the union flag on the shield. These features make it much harder for counterfeiters to replicate as it takes sophisticated machinery to create.
On the reverse side of the coin is Queen Elizabeth as she appeared at 89 years old. This image was created by Jodi Clark and shows the queen wearing her crown and royal jewels.
The reverse of the coin has the now familiar Queen Elizabeth II by Jodi Clark as commissioned by the Royal Mint. This design features the queen looking to her right wearing the crown and the royal jewels. Above her are the words ‘Elizabeth II, D.G.REG. F.D.’ which are the initials of a latin phrase which translated means “By the grace of God, queen. Defender of the faith.” The background of the coin has microdots, yet another anti-counterfeiting measure.
The Royal Mint has been making coins for over 1100 years and have demonstrated the tremendous skill that comes from experience and have proven they can embrace modern technology in creating their commemorative bullion coins. Collectors have come to rely on the mint for creating coins that are guaranteed to be high quality adorned with amazing art.
