The 2015-W American Buffalo Gold Proof holds the distinction of being the lowest-mintage standard proof Buffalo struck at the time of its release. With a final mintage of just 16,591 coins, it set a new production low for the series — below even the 2013-W’s 18,584 — and has held that record among standard proof issues. For collectors tracking key dates, the 2015-W is a straightforward target. Every coin contains one full troy ounce of .9999 fine, 24-karat gold, struck at the West Point Mint.
Key Features:

The obverse presents James Earle Fraser’s composite portrait of a Native American chief in sharp left-facing profile. The face is deeply modeled against the jet-black proof field — the brow, cheekbone, and jaw line all clearly defined in the frosted relief. Hair falls in individually struck strands swept back from the crown, with two feathers pressed flat against the left side and their quills and barbs rendered with fine precision. A wrapped braid gathers at the neck, its folds and binding struck in close detail. The “W” West Point mint mark sits behind the neck, with “2015” and the “F” Fraser initial below. The frosted portrait against the mirror field produces the deep cameo contrast that characterizes the proof Buffalo at its most striking. The reverse shows the bison in a lowered, forward-leaning stance — head dropped, its substantial mane falling in layered strands down the left shoulder and chest. The animal’s broad hindquarters taper toward the right, and the hooves plant firmly on rough, broken ground. That textured rocky base is a direct carry-over from Fraser’s 1913 Buffalo Nickel design, faithfully reproduced in every proof strike of this series and particularly sharp here against the mirror-bright background field.
The coin arrives in its original United States Mint packaging: a hardwood presentation box with a matte brown finish and a leather-like inset, with the Mint’s insignia on the exterior and a small medal on the interior lid. The Certificate of Authenticity features the same style introduced with the 2014 packaging, with gold script lettering on a cream-colored cover. The coin is housed in a protective capsule. Diameter is the standard 32.70 mm for the one-ounce proof series.
At just 16,591 coins, the 2015-W set the record for the lowest proof Buffalo mintage among standard issues at the time — a distinction that remains relevant for collectors assembling a complete date run. Add the 2015-W Gold Buffalo Proof to your cart today.
