The 2012-W American Buffalo Gold Proof is one of the genuine scarcity dates in the standard proof Buffalo series. With a final mintage of just 19,715 coins — the second-lowest one-ounce proof Buffalo produced at that point, trailing only the 2008-W’s 18,863 — this issue holds clear appeal for collectors who track production figures across the series. Every coin contains one full troy ounce of .9999 fine, 24-karat gold, struck at the West Point Mint to proof specification.
Key Features:
- Purity & Weight: 1 troy oz of .9999 fine (24-karat) gold, face value $50
- Metal: Gold
- Obverse: Right-facing portrait of a Native American chief, inscribed “LIBERTY,” dated “2012,” with “W” mint mark and “F” designer initial
- Reverse: Full-body American bison on rocky ground, inscribed “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and “1 OZ. .9999 FINE GOLD $50”
- Limited Mintage of 19,715
The obverse presents James Earle Fraser’s composite portrait of a Native American chief in sharp left-facing profile. The face is rendered with strong sculptural depth — the brow ridge well-defined, the cheekbone and jaw clearly articulated against the polished proof field. Two feathers rest against the hair on the left, and a wrapped braid gathers at the base of the neck with individual folds struck in fine detail. The “W” West Point mint mark appears to the left behind the neck, with “2012” and the “F” Fraser initial positioned below the portrait. The contrast between the frosted portrait and the mirror-bright surrounding field is pronounced, giving the design a clean, graphic quality. The reverse depicts the bison facing right across the field, its large head angled slightly downward and its full mane cascading over the shoulder and chest in individually defined strands. The animal’s weight and mass are well-conveyed in the relief, and the hooves rest on the characteristic mottled, rocky ground taken directly from Fraser’s original 1913 Buffalo Nickel design.
The coin arrives in its original United States Mint packaging: a brown leather-finish hardcover presentation box with gold-tone hardware and the Mint’s insignia embossed on the interior lid. A Certificate of Authenticity from the U.S. Mint is included, and the coin is housed in a protective capsule. The standard 32.70 mm diameter applies, consistent with the full one-ounce proof Buffalo series.
A mintage of 19,715 coins places the 2012-W firmly among the scarcer standard proof dates in the series — close in production to the low-supply 2008-W and well below the higher-output years of 2006 through 2010. Acquiring this date in original government packaging with its COA intact is increasingly uncommon. Add the 2012-W Gold Buffalo Proof to your cart today.
