The 2007-W American Buffalo Gold Proof delivers one full troy ounce of .9999 fine, 24-karat gold in a collector-grade proof strike from the West Point Mint. Compared to the inaugural 2006 issue, the 2007 coin saw a sharp drop in production, making it one of the lower-mintage entries in the early Buffalo proof series and a more elusive find for date collectors.
Key Features:
- Purity & Weight: 1 troy oz of .9999 fine (24-karat) gold, face value $50
- Metal: Gold
- Obverse: Right-facing portrait of a Native American chief, inscribed “LIBERTY,” dated 2007, with “W” mint mark and “F” designer initial
- Reverse: Full-body American bison on rocky ground, inscribed “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and “1 OZ. .9999 FINE GOLD $50”
- Limited Product Mintage of 58,998
The obverse presents James Earle Fraser’s composite portrait of a Native American chief in sharp left-facing profile. Strands of hair, a wrapped braid, and two feathers are rendered with considerable depth against the proof’s mirror-bright fields. The “W” West Point mint mark sits behind the neck, with “2007” and the “F” Fraser initial positioned below the portrait. The reverse shows the bison in a low, forward-leaning stance, its massive head dropped toward the ground and its heavily textured mane filling the upper left field. Hooves rest on uneven rock outcroppings, and the surrounding field carries the mottled texture characteristic of Fraser’s original 1913 Buffalo Nickel design — faithfully preserved in the proof strike’s frosted devices.
The coin arrives in its original United States Mint packaging: a navy blue hardcover presentation case embossed with the Great Seal and “AMERICAN BUFFALO / ONE OUNCE GOLD PROOF COIN” on the exterior, with a blue-and-white interior and gold-tone corner hardware. A Certificate of Authenticity from the U.S. Mint is included. The coin is housed in a protective capsule. Total proof mintage for 2007 was approximately 58,998 pieces — fewer than one quarter of the 2006 figure — reflecting a meaningful contraction in supply for just the series’ second year.
A low-mintage second-year proof with original government packaging and certificate intact represents a solid combination of gold content and collector scarcity. Add the 2007-W Gold Buffalo to your cart today.
