The Liberty Head Double Eagle was the workhorse of American gold coinage, carrying the country’s largest circulating denomination through the Gold Rush, the Civil War, and the decades that followed. An XF example delivers 0.9675 troy ounces of pure gold along with a coin that actually moved through the economy of its era.
Key Features:
- Purity & Weight: 90% gold, 33.436 grams gross, 0.9675 oz AGW
- Metal: Gold alloyed with copper for circulation hardness
- Obverse: Coroneted head of Liberty encircled by stars
- Reverse: Heraldic eagle with shield, rays, and denomination
The obverse shows Liberty facing left, hair drawn back into a coiled bun with loose curls falling at the neck. A coronet across her brow is inscribed LIBERTY. Thirteen six-pointed stars ring the field, and the date sits centered along the bottom rim.
The reverse carries a heraldic eagle with wings spread and head turned left, a striped Union shield on its breast. Talons grip an olive branch on one side and a bundle of arrows on the other. Scrolls bearing E PLURIBUS UNUM curl along both flanks. Above the eagle a ring of thirteen stars surrounds the motto IN GOD WE TRUST, with a burst of sun rays fanning out behind. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA arcs across the top and TWENTY DOLLARS runs along the bottom.
James B. Longacre designed the coin, which entered production in 1850 after California gold flooded the mints and a larger denomination became necessary. The type ran through 1907 in three varieties, the last of which added the trust motto and spelled out the full denomination. Saint-Gaudens replaced it that same year.
These coins measure 34 mm across with a reeded edge. At XF (Extremely Fine), wear shows on Liberty’s cheek, hair curls, and the eagle’s wing tips, but the coronet lettering stays legible and all major design elements remain fully outlined. Dates and mintmarks vary with inventory. Many were struck at Philadelphia, San Francisco, or Carson City.
