The $2 Banknote Copper Round is a tribute to the $2 Banknotes that appeared for a very short run with notes appearing in 1886, 1891, 1896 and 1899. This classic, detailed design is shown here in 1 AVDP ounce of .999 fine copper. This coin has all the intricate design details recreated on a copper round.

Key features:

  • Made of  1 AVDP oz of .999 pure copper.
  • Inspired by $2 Silver Certificate Banknote design
  • Obverse has a small portrait of George Washington with a man seated to the left of his image and a woman seated to the right of his portrait. Also contains labels to the denomination and ‘SILVER CERTIFICATE’ in reference to the note it is modeled after
  • The reverse side has denomination information and information that relates to the authenticity of the silver certificate this coin was modeled after

The $2 Silver Certificate Banknote this coin is modeled after was nicknamed “mini-portals” after the fact that it looks like George Washington is looking out of the portal of a ship. The very fact that Washington is on the $2 note is a bit of a surprise. He appeared on other bills but this is the only time Washington has ever been on a $2 bill. The layout of the design is sometimes referred to as the mechanics and agriculture design as the seated male and female are meant to represent mechanics and agriculture.

On the obverse of the coin is a portrait of George Washington. The border on the portrait and the location of his image between two people makes it kind of look like he is looking out a boat portal. To the left of his portrait is a man in robes leaning back seated. To the right is a woman in robes leaning back seated. These figures are meant to represent mechanics and agriculture. Above the portrait of Washington is a ribbon that says “TWO SILVER DOLLARS’. At the top of the coin, to the left of Washington’s portrait, and at the bottom left and right are number ‘2’s. Above the ribbon is ‘THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. At the bottom border of the banknote pictured here is ‘SILVER CERTIFICATE’.

The reverse side of the coin has the elements that are on the reverse side of the $2 banknote namely ‘2 DOLLARS’ ‘THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA’ and a statement saying it can be used for tender. At the top of the coin is the coin’s purity information, ‘1 OZ 999 FINE COPPER’. At the bottom of the coin is the name of the mint ‘ARTBARMINT’.
