The 1976 Montreal Olympic coins were so successful that when it came time to host the 1988 Olympics in Calgary, Canada, it made sense that the Royal Canadian Mint would issue coins.  This is the 1988 Canadian $20 Calgary Olympics Silver Coin. These coins were promoted ahead of the 1988 Calgary Olympics. These coins were sold to finance the Olympics and were sold from 1985-1988. The year of the issue is 1988 and comes in one of ten different designs. The design you receive depends on the stock on hand. What is certain is you get a beautifully designed coin that is 1 Troy of .9250 fine silver.

Ahead of the Calgary Olympics, the Royal Canadian Mint released ten $20 coins from 1985-1988. The sale of these coins was to raise money to fund the venture. These coins were heavily promoted and are very popular today. The coins offered here are from 1988 and you receive one of these coins with one of ten different designs. The designs feature events from the Olympics. The actual design you receive depends on stock on hand.


On the obverse side of this coin is the image of Queen Elizabeth II as she appeared at age 37. She is wearing a tiara and looking to the right. Below her is ‘ELIZABETH II CANADA Year of Issue”


The reverse side has a design honoring the Montreal Olympics. Designs include images of the events of the Olympics and include bobsledding, figure skating, speed skating, hockey, and bobsledding.  At the top left is ‘Calgary 1988’. At the bottom is ‘20 Dollars’. On the edge of the coin is ‘XV Olympic Winter Games – Jeux D’Olympiques D’Hiver’.
