Demand for Mexican Silver Libertad is really beginning to heat up. Maybe it is the high quality silver or beautiful design. Or perhaps it is the low mintage for these coins. Whatever the reason, more and more collectors are adding them to their collection. Here is the 1983 1 oz Mexican Silver Libertad Coin.

Key features:

  • Made of 1 oz of .999 fine Silver.
  • Backed by the Banco de Mexico
  • Obverse side has the image from Mexico’s Coat of Arms which is an Eagle and Snake fighting and the Eagle has the snake by the neck the Winged Victory statue and two volcanoes in the background

The Mexican Silver Libertad is quickly becoming a favorite coin among collectors. However, you still don’t see them in many collections due to their low mintages. This makes them relatively harder to get. Getting them, however, is worth it with a beautiful coin made with .999 fine silver, the design really pops. Previous to 1991, this coin was only available in the 1 oz size. Starting in 1992, they now come in a variety of sizes including 1/20 oz, 1/10 oz, ¼ oz, ½ oz, 1 oz, 2 oz and 1 kilo.

The obverse of this coin features Mexico’s National Shield, the iconic scene of the eagle biting the head of a rattlesnake. This image hearkens back to an Aztec story when the Aztec leader saw this scene play out and decided that this was a sign that this is where their great city would be founded. This city is modern day Mexico City. Above the eagle and snake scene is ‘ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS’, which means United States of Mexico.

On the reverse side of the coin is the image of Winged Victory, the statue that stands above Mexico City. This statue has Victory holding a laurel crown and a broken chain. Here she appears walking toward the viewer. In the background are the volcanoes, Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl. To the left of her is ‘1 ONZA’. To the right of her is ‘PLATA PURA’. Below her image is ‘1983 MEXICO Ley 999’.
