The Mexican Mint originated in 1535 making it one of the oldest mints in the world. Of recently, the mint is probably most known for the Libertad coin but this coin only started in 1982. What were they making all those years in between? One of those coins is the 100 Pesos Silver Coin from 1977-1979. This coin has the revolutionary leader Jose Maria Morales on the obverse side and the Mexican Coat of Arms on the reverse side. The date of the coin you receive is dependent on the stock on hand.
Key features:
- 0.6430 Troy Ounces of .720 fine silver
- 100 Pesos face value backed by the Mexican government
- Obverse side has the image of Jose Maria Morales
- Reverse side has the Mexican Coat of Arms
- Condition is Almost Uncirculated (AU) condition
- Date of the coin is from 1977-1979 and depends on stock on hand.
This coin came out in 1977 and was the Mexican version of the US Silver Dollar with even the same approximate size. Like many coins, this coin honors one of their county’s heroes, Jose Maria Morales. Morales was a Catholic priest who took over as leader when the rebel leaders fell in the 1811 revolution. This coin is made with 0.6430 Troy Ounces of .720 fine silver. This coin was short-lived because the price of silver went up in 1979 and it wasn’t practical to keep making these coins.
On the obverse of the coin is the image of Jose Maria Morales. He is shown here looking straight at the viewer. To the left of his image is ‘CIEN PESOS’. To his right is the date of issue from 1977-1979. The date of the coin you receive is contingent on the stock on hand. Above the date is the Mexican Mint mintmark. Below the image is ‘PLATA PURA 20 GR LEY .720’ which is the weight (in grams) and the purity of the coin.
The reverse side of the coin has the Mexican Coat of Arms, a rattlesnake caught in the beak of an eagle. Above the scene is ‘ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS’ which translates to ‘The United States of Mexico’ in English.
This 1977-1979 Mexico 100 Peso Silver Coin is not a coin you may see very often as the Mexican Mint limited the number of coins they made every year. This makes these coins a little rare. Get yours today.
