The 1925 Stone Mountain Memorial Half Dollar is a classic-era United States commemorative silver coin, struck in 90% silver to fund construction of the Stone Mountain Memorial in Georgia. Issued exactly 100 years ago, this Brilliant Uncirculated example offers collectors a chance to own a centennial-year piece of early 20th century American commemorative coinage.

The coin was designed by Gutzon Borglum, the sculptor who began the Stone Mountain Memorial project and later created Mount Rushmore. The obverse depicts Confederate Generals Robert E. Lee and Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson on horseback, with the inscription “IN GOD WE TRUST” above and “STONE MOUNTAIN” and the date “1925” below. The reverse features an eagle perched on a mountain ledge, surrounded by the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “HALF DOLLAR,” and “LIBERTY,” along with the coin’s commemorative dedication.

About the Condition

This is a Brilliant Uncirculated example, meaning the coin shows no wear from circulation. On a 100-year-old silver coin, BU surfaces often carry natural toning from a century of storage. We do not clean or dip our classic commemoratives. Toning is a normal characteristic of aged silver, is considered authentic to the coin’s history, and does not affect the BU grade.

Historical and Numismatic Context

The Stone Mountain Half Dollar was authorized by Congress in 1924 and issued in 1925 as part of the classic commemorative era, a period when the US Mint produced silver half dollars to commemorate specific events, anniversaries, and memorial projects. Roughly 1.3 million examples were struck, with proceeds intended to fund the carving at Stone Mountain.

Borglum’s design is notable within American numismatic art for its bold equestrian composition and high-relief sculptural style. The coin remains one of the more recognizable issues of the classic commemorative series and is widely collected today as a historical and numismatic artifact of the period.
