The Krugerrand launched in 1967 as the first modern bullion coin and remains among the most traded gold pieces in the world. This quarter ounce version contains 1/4 troy oz of pure gold in a 22 karat alloy, giving it a warmer color and noticeably better durability than .999 coins. Fractional size keeps the entry cost manageable while retaining instant global recognition.

Key Features:

  • Purity and Weight: 22 karat (.9167 fine), 8.482 grams gross, 1/4 troy oz of pure gold
  • Metal Type: Gold alloyed with copper, struck by the South African Mint
  • Obverse Design: Portrait of Paul Kruger with the SUID-AFRIKA SOUTH AFRICA legend
  • Reverse Design: Springbok antelope with denomination, date, and weight

The obverse carries a left-facing bust of Paul Kruger, president of the South African Republic in the late 19th century, rendered with his distinctive full beard and swept-back hair. The country name appears in both official languages of the original issue, with SUID-AFRIKA curving up the left side and SOUTH AFRICA down the right, separated by a small dot at the top. A dentilled border rings the design.

The reverse shows a springbok antelope in mid-stride, the national animal of South Africa, with its ringed horns curving back and its coat textured across the flank. It moves across a patch of ground worked with rough vegetation. 1/4 KRUGERRAND arcs across the top, the date splits into two halves on either side of the animal, and FYNGOUD 1/4 OZ FINE GOLD runs along the bottom rim in Afrikaans and English.

Each coin measures 22.06 mm across. Krugerrands carry no face value, deriving their worth entirely from gold content, and remain legal tender in South Africa. Dates ship at random based on inventory, and coins may show light handling consistent with storage and circulation. The copper content resists scratching better than pure gold coins of the same size.
