Each coin holds a quarter troy ounce of pure gold in a 22 karat alloy, made by Rand Refinery and the South African Mint. The quarter ounce has been part of the range since 1980, so the date on yours could come from any year since.

Kruger and the Rand

The coin’s name joins two things: Paul Kruger, four-term president of the old South African Republic, and the rand, South Africa’s currency. Kruger’s profile on the obverse comes from a portrait by Otto Schultz dated 1892, with SUID-AFRIKA and SOUTH AFRICA around it. The reverse carries Coert Steynberg’s pronking springbok, South Africa’s national animal, a design first used on the country’s five shilling coins.

Forty-Odd Years of Dates

By 1980, the year the quarter ounce arrived, the Krugerrand made up more than 90% of the world’s gold coin market. In 1985 the United States, long its largest market, banned Krugerrand imports over South Africa’s apartheid policy, and most of those sanctions were lifted in 1991. A random-year quarter can carry a date from any part of that history, or a recent one.

What You Pay for a Quarter

A quarter ounce costs more per ounce of gold than a full Krugerrand. Making a small coin costs nearly as much as making a large one, and that cost lands on less gold. You pay that premium for a coin that costs less per piece and is easier to buy, give or sell in small amounts. Years ship at our choice, and older dates may show light handling from storage.

The name combines Paul Kruger, the South African Republic’s president, whose face is on the coin, with the rand, South Africa’s currency.

Which year will I receive?

One from our stock, our choice. Quarter-ounce Krugerrands have been made since 1980, and a multi-coin order may include more than one year.

Who was Paul Kruger?

A Boer statesman who served four terms as president of the old South African Republic. His portrait on the coin comes from an 1892 likeness by Otto Schultz.

Were Krugerrands ever banned in the United States?

Yes. The United States banned imports in 1985 over apartheid, and most sanctions against South Africa were lifted in 1991.

Is a quarter ounce a good way to buy gold?
