When you get a great coin design, you stick with it. That is the story of the South African Gold Krugerrand. The obverse was designed by Otto Schultz while the reverse side was designed by Coert Steynberg back in 1967. They couldn’t have imagined this coin would continue to be one of the most popular coins in the world and would be later offered in different weights. This is the ¼ oz South African Gold Krugerrand Coin.  Made by the South African Mint using .9167 pure gold, the Krugerrand coin is an icon of the bullion coin industry. This 1/4 oz weight is a more affordable way to buy some gold. The coin you get will be from a random year between 1980-2014. It is contingent on what we have available.

Key features:

  • Contains 1/4 troy oz. of gold
  • Minted by South African Mint
  • Protective plastic coin flip
  • Bullion grade uncirculated
  • Obverse portrait of the former president of South Africa, Paul Kruger with ‘Suid-Afrika’ and ‘South Africa’ inscribed
  • Reverse picture of springbok antelope from South Africa with ‘Krugerrand ‘ ‘Year of Issue’ Fyngoud 1/4 oz Fine Gold’

The Krugerrand is a legend in the coin industry. It is internationally seen as a symbol of wealth. The South African Mint started making these coins in 1967 and by 1980 the Gold Krugerrand represented 90% of the global coin market. This inspired other countries to offer gold coins. The name ‘Krugerrand’ comes from the last name of the first and only president of South Africa, Paul Kruger, and the South African currency, the rand.

The obverse of the coin features a portrait of Paul Kruger facing to the left. Arched above him are the words ‘Suid-Afrika’ and ‘South Africa’. The reverse of the coin has a picture of a springbok antelope, the national animal of South Africa. Above the antelope is ‘Krugerrand’ to the left and right is the year of issue. Below the animal is ‘Fyngoud 1/4 oz. Fine Gold’.

The South African Mint was founded over 120 years ago. They have established themselves as a leading producer of legal tender, bullion, and commemorative, collectible coins. They use state-of-the-art technology to produce coinage for South Africa and a number of coins around the world. Their flagship product, though, is the Krugerrand which is the first and most widely traded coin in the world.

This ¼ oz South African Gold Krugerrand Coin has a rich history that makes it a great coin to add to your collection. The reputation comes from some of the finest gold in a timeless design.
