Queen or King on the Obverse
Gold Britannias dated through 2022 carry Queen Elizabeth II, crowned and facing right, inscribed ELIZABETH II D G REG F D. The year 2023 brought the first Britannias with King Charles III, and his portrait by Martin Jennings faces left, uncrowned, inscribed CHARLES III D G REX F D. Both read 10 POUNDS. Whichever you receive, the reverse stays the same: Philip Nathan’s standing Britannia, first struck on the gold coin in 1987, helmeted and holding a trident beside a shield bearing the Union flag.
From 22 Karat to 999.9
The Royal Mint launched the gold Britannia in 1987 in 22 karat gold, about 91.7% fine, alloyed with copper at first and with silver from 1990. In 2013 it switched to 999.9 fine, which is 24 karat. This listing is the 999.9 fine coin, marked 999.9 FINE GOLD on the reverse. It is soft, so handle it by the edge.
Security Features on Later Dates
In 2021 The Royal Mint added four security features to the Britannia. A latent image switches between a padlock and a trident as the coin tilts. DECUS ET TUTAMEN, “an ornament and a safeguard”, runs in micro-text around Britannia, tincture lines pick out the Union flag on her shield, and surface animation makes waves seem to roll behind her. Coins dated before 2021 were struck without them, so a random-year coin may or may not have them.
A Tenth of an Ounce Costs More Per Ounce
A tenth of an ounce of gold costs more per ounce than a full ounce does. The Royal Mint spends nearly as much striking a 16.5 mm coin as a full-size one, and that cost is spread across a tenth of the gold. Every fractional coin carries a higher premium per ounce, from any mint and in any year. The tenth ounce is the small, giftable way into gold, not the cheapest gold per ounce.

Will my coin show Queen Elizabeth II or King Charles III?
It could show either. Coins dated through 2022 carry the Queen and coins from 2023 on carry the King, and the date is chosen from our stock.
Could I receive an older 22 karat Britannia?
No. This listing is the 999.9 fine coin, struck from 2013 on. Gold Britannias dated 2012 and earlier are 22 karat and are not what this listing sells.
Does every coin have the padlock and trident feature?
Only coins dated 2021 and later. That is the year The Royal Mint added the latent image and the other three security features to the Britannia.
How big is a 1/10 oz Gold Britannia?
It is 16.5 mm across, a little smaller than a US dime. It holds a tenth of a troy ounce of gold, which is 3.11 grams of pure gold.
Is the 1/10 oz Gold Britannia IRA eligible?
Our Specifications tab lists it as IRA eligible. Its 999.9 fineness clears the federal bullion fineness rule, but the coin still has to be held by the IRA’s trustee, and custodians keep their own lists, so check with yours before you buy.
