The 2nd Amendment was ratified in 1791 along with nine other articles of the Bill of Rights. These amendments are regarded as fundamental rights guaranteed by the constitution. The founding fathers of the United States intended to make a document that guaranteed basic rights for its citizens. At the same time they made a document that is fluid and can be changed which is evidenced by this amendment. This fluidity often leads to heated debates over whether something needs or ought to be changed. The 2nd amendment is definitely one of the most often debated amendments.

The obverse side of the coin captures the feelings of many 2nd amendment advocates. The skull design reminds us that many would even die to protect it. Above and below the skull is a call to action with ‘Protect the 2nd Amendment’. Split between both sides of the skull is 1776, the date of the United States signing the Declaration of Independence which set in motion the events that led to the country’s independence.

The reverse side of the coin bears the text of the 2nd amendment- “ The 2nd Amendment- ‘A well regulated Militia, being necessary to a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed’”. Below this text is ‘999 FINE CU’, the Osborne Mint mark, and ‘ONE TROY OUNCE’.

The Osborne Mint has been making high quality coins since 1853. They believe that coins are art and it shows consistently in the beautiful coins they make.
