The next best thing to seeing the Tower of Pisa in person would be holding this coin. There is so much detail in this high-relief design. With the flat edge at the bottom of the coin, it can be stood up and you can imagine walking around the tower. The antique finish makes the details really pop.
The real Tower of Pisa started construction in 1173. Five years into the project they had just finished the third floor when it began to lean. Construction halted for 100 years. When it resumed engineers tried to counterbalance the building as they built additional floors. This seemed to only make it worse. Nevertheless, they continued to build the Tower adding more floors and a bell tower. Over the years there have been numerous attempts to right the tower but to no avail. In 2008, engineers managed to stabilize the tower enough for people to visit it safely.
The obverse of the coin has a high relief depiction of the Tower of Pisa leaning to the left. To the left of the Tower is a small image of Queen Elizabeth II. This is the classic Ian Rank-Broadley version of the queen which is why there is an IRB underneath. To the right of the Tower is the Pisa cathedral. At the top of the coin is ‘QUEEN ELIZABETH II’ and ‘COOK ISLANDS’. Below the tower is ‘10 DOLLARS’.
On the reverse side of the coin is the Tower of Pisa leaning to the right. In the background is a close-up detail of the Tower. In the background detail is written ‘650 years’. Written at the top of the coin is ‘LEANING TOWER OF PISA’. At the bottom is ‘1372-2022’.
This coin is a work of art and a great conversation piece. It also happens to be a great way to get some silver into your collection. Get yours today.
