At this point in time, it is hard to know what it is that collectors love most about this $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coin. Is it for its historical significance? Or is it for its composition? When it was first issued in 1849, it was the largest denomination of coin offered. This coin is made with .90 pure gold. This coin is offered here in Very Fine (VF) condition.
Coin Highlights:
- Made of .9675 troy oz of .90 pure gold
- Face value of $20 backed by the US Mint
- Designed by John B. Longacre
- VF (Very Fine) condition
John B. Longacre designed the Liberty Double Eagle coin and took inspiration from ancient Greco-Roman currency. His depiction of Lady Liberty has her in profile with thirteen stars around her in honor of the thirteen original colonies. She is shown having curly hair that surrounds a diadem tiara with her name on it.
On the reverse side of the coin is Longacre’s version of the Great Seal of the United States. The seal features a bald eagle with a shield being carried by its wings. Clutched in its talons is an olive branch and a group of arrows. Around the outside of the coin is ‘UNITED STATES OF AMERICA’. Two banners come off the shield with one having ‘E PLURIBUS’ and ‘UNUM. At the bottom of the coin is ‘TWENTY D.” From 1849 to 1866. In 1866, “In God We Trust’ was added. In 1877, ‘TWENTY D’ was changed to ‘TWENTY DOLLARS’. Depending on what year you get (dependent on stock on hand), your coin will have these respective differences.
Getting a $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coin in Very Fine condition is proving to be a pretty rare opportunity. These coins are available for a limited time since we don’t know how long they will last and if we can get more back as it is getting harder and harder to get them.
