John B. Longacre designed the Liberty Double Eagle coin and took inspiration from ancient Greco-Roman currency. His depiction of Lady Liberty has her in profile with thirteen stars around her in honor of the thirteen original colonies. She is shown having curly hair that surrounds a diadem tiara with her name on it.
On the reverse side of the coin is Longacre’s version of the Great Seal of the United States. The seal features a bald eagle with a shield being carried by its wings. Clutched in its talons is an olive branch and a group of arrows. Around the outside of the coin is ‘UNITED STATES OF AMERICA’. Two banners come off the shield with one having ‘E PLURIBUS’ and ‘UNUM. At the bottom of the coin is ‘TWENTY D.” From 1849 to 1866. In 1866, “In God We Trust’ was added. In 1877, ‘TWENTY D’ was changed to ‘TWENTY DOLLARS’. Depending on what year you get (dependent on stock on hand), your coin will have these respective differences.
