The “Mutiny on the Bounty” is a classic subject of film and literature. At its core, the idea of a treacherous mutiny is exciting. What can be more dramatic than a group of fed-up crew members taking control of their ship and displacing the failing captain? This 2021 1 Oz Cook Island Bounty Silver Coin celebrates and commemorates the historic HMS Bounty, which was briefly a ship in the Great Britain fleet before it was mutinied and eventually burned by its mutineers. Its beautiful reverse side includes a detailed depiction of the ship itself, as well as a repeating wave design to add both security and visual appeal.  This coin is being minted and distributed by the Cook Islands Mint. Cook Islands is a self-governed island country associated with New Zealand. The small ocean state has quickly established a reputation for itself as a distributor of beautiful silver bullion coins. This particular piece comes with full backing from the Cook Islands government, as evidenced by its face value of 1 dollar. The reverse side, like many coins from islands associated with the British monarchy, features a stunning image of the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II.

Key Features:

  • .9999 pure silver (1 Troy Ounce)
  • Face value of 1 Dollar backed by the Cook Islands
  • Obverse depiction: Queen Elizabeth as designed by Ian Rank-Broadley in 1998
  • Reverse depiction: The HMS Bounty ship against a wave background

The original HMS Bounty was commissioned and built in North England in 1784. The beginning years of the ship were characterized by a number of simple merchant missions, as businessmen distributed goods from England to the other ports of Europe. This period only lasted for about three years, as the ship was eventually purchased by the Royal Navy for official use by the British Empire. Armor and weapons were added to the ship, providing it with all the tools necessary to function as an official vessel for the world’s most powerful Navy.  Though naturally beautiful, the HMS Bounty only lasted a single voyage while working with the Royal Navy. It set out to acquire and bring back breadfruit plants from Tahiti to the West Indies, where they would hopefully be used as a food source for British slaves there. The ship’s crew conducted a mutiny in April of 1789, sending the captain and loyal crew of the vessel out to sea and claiming the HMS Bounty for themselves. They eventually burned the ship in 1790, where it was largely undiscovered until 1957. Relive the tremendous history and beauty of this incredible ship with the 2021 Cook Islands 1 Oz Silver HMS Bounty Coin. The collectable coin is struck using a full Troy Ounce of .9999 pure silver, and the intricate details of the classic ship really shine against the pure silver bullion. The ship makes an appearance on the reverse against the backdrop of a repeating wave design. The repeating design makes another appearance on the obverse, along with Ian Rank-Broadley’s depiction of Queen Elizabeth II.  If you’re a fan of the majesty and history of the British Navy and the HMS Bounty’s dramatic story of mutiny and betrayal, the 2021 Cook Islands 1 Oz Silver HMS Bounty is an excellent addition to any collection.
