The Mexican Silver Libertad has been issued annually by La Casa de Moneda de México since 1982, making it one of the longest-running silver bullion programs in the world — and notably, the first silver bullion coin ever issued without an assigned face value. The 2009 issue carries 1 troy oz of .999 fine silver and recorded a final mintage of 1,650,000 coins — the fifth-highest production year in the series at the time of issue, and a figure that stands in sharp contrast to several surrounding years that came in well below one million.

Key Features:

  • Purity and weight: 1 troy oz of .999 fine silver
  • Metal: Silver
  • Obverse: Winged Victory standing before the twin volcanoes Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl; inscribed 1 Onza, Plata Pura, 2009, Ley .999, and the OM mint mark
  • Reverse: Current Mexican national coat of arms at center, surrounded by ten historical versions of the shield; inscribed Estados Unidos Mexicanos
  • Mintage: 1,650,000 coins

The obverse presents Winged Victory — modeled after the Angel of Independence monument in Mexico City — in three-quarter profile with wings fully spread and one arm extended forward. The twin volcanic peaks of Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl rise in the background across a broad valley floor, with the landscape rendered in careful low relief. The OM mint mark of La Casa de Moneda de México sits to the right of the figure, and the inscriptions confirm weight, purity, and year along the upper rim.

The reverse carries the current national coat of arms — the eagle on cactus with serpent in its beak, wreathed in laurel and oak — at center, with ten smaller historical renditions of the Mexican shield arranged in a ring around it. The compositions span different periods of the nation’s history, giving the reverse a depth of numismatic detail that distinguishes the Libertad from most bullion issues. Estados Unidos Mexicanos arcs across the upper field.

Each coin is struck in brilliant uncirculated condition by La Casa de Moneda de México, the oldest operating mint in North America, established in 1535.
