The 2020 Queen’s Beasts White Lion design is a departure from the way the White Lion of Mortimer is usually depicted. The lion is often shown with its tail between its legs and acting kind of submissive. Jody Clark’s version of the White Lion shows a more dignified look. On the lion’s shield is a sun which is believed to be inspired by a time that the sun came out before combat and Edward IV convinced his men that it was a sign from God to inspire them. The obverse features the now classic portrait of Queen Elizabeth II in such great detail by artist Jody Clark.
The Queen’s Beasts Collection was inspired by ten 6 ft. statues that were created for Queen Elizabeth’s coronation. Each of the beasts depicts creatures that appear at various times as symbols of the British monarchy. The ten-coin collection started in 2016 and includes coins featuring: The Lion of England (2016, 2017), The Red Dragon of Wales (2017, 2018), The Griffin of Edward III (2017,2018), The Black Bull of Clarence (2018, 2019), The Unicorn (2018, 2019), The Yale of Beaufort (2019, 2020), The Falcon of the Plantagenets (2019, 2020), The White Horse of Hanover (2020, 2021), The White Lion of Mortimer (2020, 2021), The White Greyhound of Richmond (2021, 2022). The Royal Mint also released a collector’s coin with all ten beasts on it in 2021.
