Since its release in 1967, the Gold Krugerrand has continued to soar in worldwide popularity. Although these coins have no face value, their value is based on the pure gold used to produce them.

The South African Gold Krugerrand is beloved for its content and recognizable design. Produced by the South African Mint since 1967, each Krugerrand contains 91.67% gold, with copper as the remaining component.

By 1980, success of the coin had clearly manifested itself, accounting for 90% of the global gold coin market. It was a definitive choice for investors around the world. Since its inception, over 22 million Krugerrands have been imported to the United States.

The obverse design features a portrait of Paul Kruger, the first President of the Republic of South Africa.

The reverse highlights Africa’s national animal, the elegant antelope. The success of the Gold Krugerrand has encouraged countries around the world to mint their own gold bullion coins, namely the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf, the Australian Nugget, the Chinese Gold Panda, the American Gold Eagle and the British Britannia.

The standard set by South African bullion is one that immensely affected the scope of the precious metals industry.

History of the Gold Krugerrand

The Krugerrand was introduced in 1967 as a means for the public to own gold bullion. It was minted in a gold and copper alloy, which is more durable than pure gold  and gives the coin a more reddish tint than its competing counterparts.

While the South African Mint was responsible for the striking and selling of these 1 oz coins, it was the Rand Refinery who provided the pure form of gold for mass production. Founded in 1920, the refinery continues to be the world’s largest single-site refinery and smelting complex.

While apartheid made it illegal to import the Krugerrand to many Western countries during the 70s and 80s, it continued to have a large demand in the East, with countries such as Iran, Turkey, Thailand, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Latin America.

Even with restricting penalties, the Krugerrand managed to account for 90% of the global gold coin market by 1980. When sanctions ended in the early 90s, and the apartheid policy was abandoned, South Africa was able to sell their beloved bullion world-wide.

As you can imagine, its popularity surged higher than ever. Today, over 50 million ounces have been sold since the coin’s inception, nearly six decades ago.

The Gold Krugerrand Design

The obverse of the South African Gold Krugerrand, designed by Otto Schultz, features the Republic of South Africa’s first president, Paul Kruger.

To this day, Kruger remains a revered, historical figure, and was affectionately known by his people as “Oom Paul”, or Uncle Paul. He served four consecutive terms from 1883 through 1900, acting as a firm force of resistance against British rule. “Suid Afrika” and “South Africa” are engraved on the left and right side of the effigy, respectively.

The reverse image was designed by Coert Steynberg (1905-1982), a renowned South African sculptor. Steynberg was inspired by the continent’s national animal: the antelope. His depiction shows a springbok (a medium-sized antelope) posing majestically in a field of tall grass. Steynberg’s design for the Gold Krugerrand was also used on the South African five shilling coin, produced several decades prior.

The name “Krugerrand” and the gold content are inscribed in both English and Afrikaans, a Western Germanic language commonly spoken in South Africa. The year of mintage is also included.

Composition of the South African Gold Krugerrand

Being one of the most well-known coins in the industry, the South African Gold Krugerrand is produced in a 22-karat gold alloy, commonly referred to as “crown gold”. This practice was originally formulated by King Henry VIII in the mid-16th century.

Each 1 oz coin has the same measurements: 2.84 mm (diameter) and 32.8 mm (thickness), garnished with the classic, reeded edging.
