The Plank Privateer 2 oz Silver Round reminds us of one of the most feared forms of punishment a captain used to keep order on his ship-walking the plank. This was the way things ended for many an errant sailor. If you crossed the captain or didn’t obey him then this could lead to walking to the end of the plank. This round is made from 2 oz of .999 fine silver
Key features:
- Made of 2 Troy ounces of .999 fine silver
- Obverse has a skull inside a ship’s helm with rope draped around it
- The reverse has the image of a sailor being made to walk the plank
The obverse side of the round has the image of a skull inside of a ship’s helm. Rope is draped around this steering wheel. At the top of the round is ‘NO PREY NO PAY’ which sounds like a pirate creed. If you aren’t preying on other boats then you are getting the riches. At the bottom of the round is “2 oz FINE SILVER .999’.
On the reverse side is a scene that played out on many ships around the world. A captain has his hand musket trained on a man who is at the end of a plank of wood that has been laid at the edge of the ship and is hanging out over the water. The man is blindfolded and bound with rope. You can feel the tension as you wonder if he will willingly step off the plank or will the captain fire on him. You can’t help wonder-how did it come to this? What did this man do to get in this predicament?
Captains had to maintain discipline on their ships while at sea and so they had to get creative with how they might meet out punishments. Among their punishments were whipping with a “cat of nine tails”, keel-hauling, and walking the plank. Walking the plank was generally the end. One way or another that sailor was no longer a problem.
The Plank Privateer 2 oz Silver Round is an excellent quality coin and is the perfect gift for anyone who appreciates the pirate lifestyle or just likes a good conversation piece. Get yours today.
