Great Britain was one of the first countries to produce gold coins and these were used all over the world as the British Empire expanded. The last gold sovereign coin of these early days was minted in 1604. They were called ‘sovereign coins’ because they had the image of the sovereign leader of the British Empire at that time.

Sovereign coins returned in 1817 by legislation, the Great Recoinage Act  of 1816. Thus began an 100 year run where these coins were minted every year. This run ended starting 1917 when the coin was only minted one time in 1925 and then until 1957. 1957 saw the return of these coins into annual production and they are still made today.

On the reverse of these sovereign coins is the image of St. George on horseback going to battle a dragon. This design was created by Benedetto Pistrucci in 1817. Also on this side is the year of issue.

Each sovereign coin has the image of the ‘sovereign’, the reigning monarch of the United Kingdom on the obverse side of the coin. Past rulers include King Edward VII, King George V and Queen Victoria. All coins since 1957 have the image of Queen Elizabeth. Since then, there have been three versions of her right-profile portrait.

With the Great Britain Gold Sovereign Coin of Any Type you may not know what year or condition of coin you get but what is certain is you will receive a high quality coin from one of the greatest mints in the world and good way to get a little gold into your collection.

I received a beautiful, gorgeous full of history coin from Hero Bullion. Honestly, I have been expected to receive 1959 Great Britain Gold Sovereign Coin instead 2010 any way I am not disappointed about because by description I got the right coin “Great Britain Gold Sovereign Coin/Any Type” and at the end I am happy to receive it.
