Canadian Gold Maple History

The Canadian Gold Maple 1 oz Coin was first issued in 1979. It was the second international gold bullion coin to be recognized, following South Africa’s Gold Krugerrand. The concept of the Maple Leaf was originally brainstormed by Walter Ott in 1978. Ott’s vision soon became one of the world’s most pure and popular coins.

The original obverse design featured a young, 39-year-old Queen Elizabeth II, Canada’s constitutional monarch and head of state. The Royal Canadian Mint replaced this image with a 64-year-old Elizabeth in 1990 and later, a 79-year-old Elizabeth in 2005. The 2005 version remains the current design.

The purity of gold, initially 99.9%, was raised to 99.99% in 1982, three years after the coin’s inception. The RCM introduced subsequent denominations and sizes in the following years, in addition to several special edition coins, commemorating the beauty, success and popularity of the collection.

The Canadian Gold Maple continues to make its mark in the pages of history as one of the most trusted, reliable and exceptional sources of bullion in the world.

Design of the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf

In comparison to other 1 oz gold coins, the Canadian Gold Maple has kept a steady design throughout the years. The obverse features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II or King Charles III.

*Please note that the version of the obverse portrait may vary based on the year it was minted.

The reverse image features the namesake of the coin and Canada’s national symbol, the maple leaf. The recognition of the maple leaf as a Canadian symbol can be traced back to early explorers who settled near the St. Lawrence River. The settlement eventually became modern-day Montreal. In 1834, Montreal’s first mayor, Jacques Viger, lauded the maple leaf as “the king of the forest”.

Since then, it has been an iconic symbol that continues to be a large part of Canadian culture.

Inscriptions on the reverse include the word “Canada” as well as the coin’s weight, purity and content. As an extra measure to prevent counterfeit, all Gold Maples post-2013 have a privy mark that is micro-inscribed with the last two digits of the minted year.

1 oz Gold Maple Composition

The standard 1 ounce Canadian Maple Leaf is composed of 99.99% gold content, making it one of the purest forms of bullion in the world. The original Maple Leaf had a 99.9% purity, which was upped in 1982 to its current standard.

The purity and content of each Gold Maple is assured by the Canadian Government.

Packaging Info

Purchased individually, each Canadian Maple Leaf will arrive in standard, protective flips for your convenience. Bulk options include tubes of 10 coins or Monster Boxes of 500 coins each, for a grand total of 50 tubes.
