History: The Canadian Gold Maple was first produced by the Royal Canadian Mint in 1979. It was the second source of gold bullion to be recognized worldwide, trailing only to South Africa’s Gold Krugerrand.
The concept of the Maple Leaf was brainstormed by Walter Ott, who was looking to create an alternative to the Krugerrand. In less than a year, Ott’s vision became a reality, and the RCM began producing his work. Decades later, and the design continues to be one of national pride and worldwide popularity. The original obverse design, released in 1979, features a young Queen Elizabeth II, at age 39. The image remained until 1990, when it was replaced with a 64-year-old Elizabeth, and 15 years later, a nearly 80-year-old portrait of her majesty.
The 2005 update remains as the current, standard design. Although originally introduced with a purity of 99.9%, the Royal Canadian Mint raised that purity to 99.99% in 1982, introducing a number of sizes and denominations in the following decades. Many special edition and anniversary coins were minted, commemorating the grandeur and success the collection had garnered.
Design: Unlike its competitors, the Canadian Gold Maple has carried a lasting and consistent design, with only a few tweaks along the way.
The obverse features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, originally designed by artist and sculptor Arnold Machin. Machin’s work was additionally used on a variety of currency from Australia and New Zealand. While all Golden Maples feature Queen Elizabeth’s effigy, the age of the current reigning monarch may vary, based on production year. The design has changed on three separate occasions and was last updated in 2005. “Elizabeth II”, “5 Dollars” and the year are also engraved.
The reverse image features Canada’s national symbol, the maple leaf. The significance of this foliage has been traced back to early French Canadian settlers in the 19th century, who were enamored with the leaf, claiming it was the most majestic in the forest. The significance of the maple leaf has stood the test of time and continues to be a symbol of pride, unity and solidarity. The word “Canada” is inscribed, as well as the coin’s weight, purity and gold content. The detailed artistry of this design undoubtedly make it an instant classic that is desirable to both investors and collectors around the world.
Composition: The Royal Canadian Mint originally debuted each Gold Maple with a purity of .999. However, all coins produced from after 1982 have a 99.99% gold content that is guaranteed by the Canadian Government. This makes any Maple Leaf one of the most pure forms of bullion available on the market today.
