History: The United States Mint has a history of excellence, quality and reliability that has continued since its initiation. Founded in the late 18th century, shortly after the achievement of American independence, the Philadelphia branch (or as it was first called “Ye Olde Mint”) was originally a division of the State Department. However, it was granted autonomy in 1799. Today, the Mint boasts four facilities across the country: Philadelphia (1792), San Francisco (1854), Denver (1863) and most recently West Point (1988). The West Point branch was originally built to serve as a storage unit. However, like it’s counterparts across the nation, it now strikes American Eagles in gold, silver and platinum. While the Mint is primarily known for their production of legal coinage, they also create Congressional and commemorative medals and properly distribute quantities of gold and silver across the nation. In 1995, a collaborative effort amongst Phillip N. Diehl (United States Mint), David L. Ganz (American Numismatic Association) and Jacques Luben (Platinum Guild International) was formed to begin the legislative process of preparing the Eagle for production. The series was officially launched in 1997. The Platinum Eagle is the official platinum bullion coin of the United States, in addition to being the one and only source of investment grade platinum available in the country.

Design: The obverse each American Eagle carries a historic and patriotic image, commonly recognized by millions across the world, designed by Chief Mint Engraver, John Mercanti. Mercanti retired in 2010, but his iconic artwork can be found on many products produced by the Mint. The iconic Lady Liberty graces the front, with the word “LIBERTY” engraved across the top. “E Pluribus Unum”, “In God We Trust” and the year of mintage are additionally inscribed.  The reverse image was designed by Thomas D. Rogers, a former sculptor and engraver for the United States Mint. His best known work can be seen on the Sacagawea dollars. The reverse of each American Platinum Eagle features America’s national bird, the eagle, soaring in the sky. An impending sunrise can be seen in the left hand corner. “United States of America” is engraved, along with purity, content and weight. Please note that the reverse design for each American Platinum Eagle may differ based on its year of mintage. The design described above is the original that debuted in 1997. All Platinum Eagles are guaranteed by the United States Government.

Composition: With a design you won’t forget, the 1 oz American Platinum Eagle is composed of .9995 fine platinum. Each coin measures 32.7 mm in diameter and 2.39 mm in thickness, complete with reeded edges. As with all products produced by the U.S. Mint, the composition of each American Eagle is guaranteed by the United States Government.

Packaging Info: Individual American Platinum Eagles will arrive in protective, plastic flips. Bulk options include mint tubes of 20 coins or Monster Boxes of 500 coins, with the box holding a total of 25 tubes. All American Platinum Eagles provided in this listing are in BU condition.
