History of the American Gold Buffalo

Minted since June of 2006, the American Gold Buffalo marks the first occasion that the United States Mint has produced a .9999 fine gold coin for public consumption. Under Public Law 109-145, also known as the Presidential $1 Coin Act of 2005, the government announced the striking and issuing of $50 Gold American Buffalo bullion and proof coins. Additionally, the law set out guidelines for the coin’s volume, price, legal tender status, production and gold sourcing, amongst other stipulations. The Act was partly passed to keep pace with other countries, such as China and Canada, who had already designed and produced 24-karat bullion options (i.e. the Chinese Gold Panda and the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf, respectively). The Gold Buffalo is inspired by the iconic artwork of James Earle Fraser, the chief designer of the Indian Head nickel, a design that is highly regarded as one of the best of any U.S. coin. Fraser’s nickel made its debut in 1913.

Gold Buffalo Design

The design of the American Gold Buffalo is a direct modification of James Earle Fraser’s work on the Indian Head nickel (1913). The obverse shows the well-known Native American chieftain. Fraser is said to have modeled his work after a composite of three different Chieftains: Chief Iron Tail, Chief Two Moons and Chief Big Tree.

All individuals posed for Fraser in the early 1900s and became an unmistakably large part of bullion history. “Liberty”, the year and the mint mark are additionally engraved.  The reverse, also designed by Fraser, features an American buffalo. While some accounts say that Fraser modeled his work after Black Diamond, a buffalo at New York’s Central Park Zoo, others claim that he was inspired by Bronx, a bison at the rival Bronx Zoo, commonly frequented by the artist.

Either way, the design has become one of the most beloved in the history of U.S. coinage. “United States of America”, “E Pluribus Unum”, “In God We Trust” and the weight, purity and face value are also inscribed.  When the American Gold Buffalo was first debuted in the summer of 2006, Deputy Director David A. Lebryk noted in a press release that “these classic and beautiful American Indian and Buffalo designs by James Earle Fraser, which have been American favorites since they were first used in 1913, recall a golden age of coin artistry.” The obverse and reverse designs speak for themselves, as they are two images you surely will not forget.

American Gold Buffalo Coins are .9999 Fine Gold

Unlike the American Gold Eagle, the Gold Buffalo is produced in 24-karat gold and contains one ounce of .9999 fine gold. Because it does not include silver or copper components, it is slightly smaller in size. Each 1 oz coin has a diameter of 1.287 inches and a thickness of .116 inches, with its weight and gold content provided on the reverse. All Gold Buffalos are struck at the U.S. Mint’s facility in West Point, New York.

I believe this is one of the most beautiful gold coins minted. I’m delighted with our purchase. Be sure to keep it in a capsule because .9999 fine gold is very soft and easy to scratch.
