Benjamin Franklin’s reputation as one of the founding fathers is exceptional. Throughout his life, the Renaissance man invented, legislated, and helped forge the United States into one of the foremost world powers of the early 19th century. Franklin was a fascinating character. His memoir provides an especially poignant insight into his unique personality and philosophy, but almost all accounts of Benjamin Franklin’s life make mention of his tremendous intellect and leadership prowess.
The first Benjamin Franklin Half Dollars were minted by Nellie Tayloe Ross, who was the U.S. Mint Director at the time. As the director of the Mint, Ross always closely admired Benjamin Franklin. Her major project as the Mint Director was to commemorate Benjamin Franklin’s contributions to the United States with a coin featuring his likeness. It took Ross over a decade to successfully oversee the release of American Half Dollars with Franklin on them, but the coins were eventually released from 1948 to 1964, when recently assassinated John F. Kennedy replaced Benjamin Franklin on the coins. Hero Bullion is excited to offer circulated 90% Silver Franklin Half Dollars to its customers.
Key Features:
- 90% pure silver, .3575 Troy Ounces per coin.
- Backed by the U.S. government (Face Value: $.5).
- Obverse Depiction: Benjamin Franklin’s portrait.
- Reverse Depiction: The American Liberty Bell.
The Kennedy Half Dollar is clearly the most recognizable of the American Half Dollar series. Part of the reason behind its popularity is the extremely long run that the design has enjoyed; the Kennedy Half Dollar has been minted once yearly since 1964. By comparison, the Silver Franklin Half Dollar is a much rarer coin. Because Kennedy’s assassination and subsequent memorialization on the Half Dollar happened in 1963/64, the Franklin Half Dollar was really only circulated for around sixteen years.
A growing portion of the silver coin collecting community has come to appreciate the value of circulated coins. While Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) collectable coins have their own appeal, the historical value of coins that have been circulated and used provides a unique opportunity to collectors. For the Franklin Half Dollar, circulated coins provide a valuable insight into a specific time period in American history. These coins are over sixty years old now, and the natural wear they display reflects the incredible history of the coins as an American symbol.
The obverse of this coin is Benjamin Franklin’s portrait, as well as the phrases “Liberty” and “In God We Trust” and the mint date of the piece. Flip the coin over to reveal the liberty bell, a classic fixture in American iconography. Hero Bullion sells these coins in packages of two, providing a total face value of one United States Dollar.
Fans of American history should appreciate Benjamin Franklin’s impressive contributions to the shaping of the United States of America. Even people who don’t know much about Benjamin Franklin are likely to recognize this coin’s place in the history of American coin mintage.

My favorite constitutional silver. These Franklin’s feel and sound great in one’s palm and pocket. Buying and stashing and forgetting about them until they fill the bags and need more space. 5 stars.
