In Norse mythology it was believed that when a warrior died in combat he was escorted to Valhalla, a paradise for warriors by Valkyries. Some believe these were Odin’s daughters, beautiful warrior princesses. The Germania Mint has decided to honor these women by making beautiful coins starting with Hildegard.
On the obverse of the coin is Hildegard dressed for battle. She is wearing armor and is carrying a shield in her right hand and a spear in the left. On her shield is the image of the Fenrir wolf, a monstrous wolf from Norse mythology. On her armor is the protective rune, Algiz. To the right of her is a wolf. A wolf is also seen in the background sitting on a rock and howling at the moon. Behind her and the wolf is a stronghold complete with a palisade. The Germania Mint has invited viewers to look for more symbols of Norse mythology hidden on the coin. At the top of the coin is ‘HILDEGARD’ in a runic looking font. Her hair, the fur on her shoulders and her shield are accented in black. The wolf is also accented in black. The immediate background is accented in gold while the furthest background is accented in black.
The reverse side has a highly detailed shield. Around the edge are many runes. The shield looks like wood banded with iron. The design is so detailed you can see the grain of the wood. On the shield is a wolf and the Germania Mint’s logo. At the top of the shield is written “GERMANIA 2022 1 oz Ag 999.9” Below the wolf and mint logo is ‘5 mark’. The wood grain of the shield is accented in black while the rest of the shield is accented in gold.
