On April 14, 1912, the Titanic sank in icy waters after hitting an iceberg. Over 1500 people lost their lives that day. In sharp contrast to this horrible disaster was the excitement and promise of what the Titanic was meant to be. Built as the largest ship at the time, this was the ship’s maiden voyage. The ship was outfitted with some of the most sophisticated safety equipment and was thought to be virtually unsinkable being designed with 16 watertight compartments in the hull. If up to four of these watertight compartments were breached, it could stay afloat. Coupons hitting the iceberg, it pierced five compartments. Miraculously, over 700 people survived with the help of another cruise ship that rescued people from the waters.

On the obverse is a small version of Ian Rank-Broadley’s classic depiction of Elizabeth II. Here she is facing to the right with a look of determination on her face. She is wearing a crown and the Royal Jewelry. To the left of her image is ‘Elizabeth II’. Below her is the route the Titanic was taking with the place it went down marked. Below this is the deck plan of the Titanic.  At the bottom of the coin is ‘2022’.

The reverse has the image of the Titanic as she moves across the ocean. She looks large and majestic against the ominous icebergs in the water. The ship itself is detailed in full color. At the bottom of the image is ‘TITANIC’.
