2022 1 oz British Maid Marian Gold Coin

The 2022 1oz. British Maid Marian Gold Coin is here and it looks fabulous in .9999 fine gold. This is the second coin in the Robin Hood series within the Myths and Legends series of coins the Royal Mint has made. This coin has a face value of 100 pounds and is legal tender which means it  is backed by the British government.

This is the second of three coins honoring the Robin Hood legend. The first coin was of Robin Hood. This one features Maid Marian while the next coin is to have Lil John the featured character. Maid Marian was Robin Hood’s companion and was said to have been a part of the aristocracy but was working for Robin Hood and his Merry men. She was a key part of Robin Hood’s success in his adventures.

 

The obverse of the coin has Jody Clark’s Queen Elizabeth. Clark’s artwork has the queen as she was at 89 looking regal and stately wearing her crown and royal jewelry. This piece was commissioned by the Royal Mint in 2015. To the right of the queen is ‘ELIZABETH II’ and ‘100 Pounds’.is written to the left.  Below the image are the initials ‘D.G. REG.F.D.’ which is Latin for “by the Grace of God’ and “defender of the faith’. 

 

On the reverse is Maid Marian, Robin Hood’s companion. She is dressed for the woods in a tunic and seems to be wearing leather gloves. On her back is a bow and a quiver full of arrows. She seems to be looking intently to the right perhaps as a lookout. To the left of the image is ‘MAID MARIAN’. Top right of the coin is engraved ‘1 oz. FINE GOLD 999.9’ and ‘2022’.
