Most Silver Eagles have a story you can summarize in a sentence. This one needed a pandemic, a bullion shortage, and a mid-year design change to exist. The 2021 (P) American Silver Eagle was struck at the Philadelphia Mint under Emergency Production, carries the final-year Heraldic Eagle Type 1 reverse, and earns a perfect MS70 grade from NGC with the Early Releases designation.

Key Features:

  • Purity and Weight: 1 troy ounce of .999 fine silver
  • Face Value: One Dollar, legal tender of the United States
  • Grade: NGC MS70, the highest grade awarded
  • Designation: Early Releases, blue label
  • Mint: Struck at Philadelphia, attributed (P) for Emergency Production
  • Type: Heraldic Eagle Type 1, the original 1986 reverse in its final year
  • Obverse: Adolph A. Weinman’s Walking Liberty, dated 2021
  • Reverse: John Mercanti’s heraldic eagle with Union shield

The (P) attribution is what separates this coin from an ordinary 2021 Eagle. Bullion Silver Eagles normally come out of West Point without a mintmark. When demand overwhelmed capacity, the Mint routed production to Philadelphia and San Francisco, and NGC attributes those coins with the parenthetical mintmark and the Emergency Production label. Add the Type 1 reverse, retired partway through 2021 in favor of the new eagle-in-flight design, and this becomes a coin that can never be struck again in this configuration.

The obverse carries Adolph A. Weinman’s Walking Liberty, adapted from the 1916 half dollar. Liberty strides toward a rising sun with her robe streaming behind her, the Stars and Stripes draped across her shoulder, olive branches gathered in her left arm and her right hand extended in greeting. LIBERTY arcs across the top, IN GOD WE TRUST sits at the right field, and the date 2021 anchors the base.

The reverse is John Mercanti’s heraldic eagle, spread-winged behind a Union shield, gripping an olive branch in one talon and thirteen arrows in the other, with a banner of E PLURIBUS UNUM in its beak and thirteen stars arranged above. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA wraps the upper rim, and 1 OZ. FINE SILVER — ONE DOLLAR runs along the bottom.

At MS70, the coin shows no post-production imperfections at 5x magnification. The frosted devices and satin fields are as clean as the Mint could produce, which is a meaningful achievement given the rushed conditions of Emergency Production. The coin is sealed in a tamper-evident NGC holder with a blue Early Releases label listing the Philadelphia strike, the Type 1 attribution, and the Emergency Production designation, along with a unique certification number and barcode for verification through NGC’s online lookup.

A perfect grade, a one-year mint attribution, and the last appearance of a design that ran for thirty-five years is a combination that does not repeat. Add the 2021 (P) Emergency
