The fascinating aesthetic of the golden age of sea travel and piracy is nearly impossible to deny. Large sailing ships once dominated the sea, immaculate structures transporting the equivalent of billions of dollars each year and cargo all over the world. In the eighteenth century, the dominance of the Royal British Navy helped the country to maintain one of the greatest empires the world has ever seen.

Many symbols of this unique era in world history make their way onto popular gold, silver, and platinum coins. But the HMS Bounty is a particularly classic representation of the golden era of sailing. This ship was first constructed in YorkShire, England all the way back in 1784. Although it only ever conducted one voyage as part of the massive fleet of the Royal Navy, its likeness has become a time-honored symbol for the British Navy’s most powerful time.

Key Features:

  • .9999 pure silver.
  • Value backed by Cook Islands legal government (face value: $2).
  • Obverse depiction: Ian Rank-Broadley’s Queen Elizabeth design.
  • Reverse depiction:The classic HMS Bounty sails through the sea.

The Queen of England is, without a doubt, the most recognizable monarch in the entire world. The Royal government of Great Britain has historically maintained an extremely large military, as well as an expansive empire. It’s no surprise that, even in 2020, her likeness makes an appearance on coins around the world. Even coins minted by the Royal Canadian Mint often include the Queen on their obverse side.

The 2020 Cook Islands 2 Oz Silver HMS Bounty Coin is no exception to this tradition. The Queen is featured on its obverse side, along with inscriptions of her name, of “Cook Islands,” and of the year of minting (2020). The Ian Rank-Broadley design is one of the most recognizable. Created for the Royal British Mint itself back in 1998, this depiction of the Queen shows her in a youthful state; she has aged twenty years since it was drafted! This effigy of the Queen is the one featured on this coin. Her profile includes the crown.

But the reverse of this coin is truly something unique. The classic imagery of the HMS Bounty invokes a sense of adventure and excitement. There are certainly few periods in British history more exciting than this age of exploration on the high seas as the country worked to maintain (and expand) its control of countries and territories all over the world. Struck into the extremely pure .9999 silver, the ship really shows off its intricate and vast design. The weight, silver content, and face value of $2 are also inscribed on this reverse side.

Backed by the existing government of The Cook Islands, the 2020 Cook Islands 2 Oz Silver HMS Bounty Coin taps into the vibrant past of the British Royal Navy. This coin’s value is twofold; it includes both a collectible and intricate design and an exceptionally high purity of silver. Any collector who appreciates the history of the exciting British Empire will love to add this coin to their collection.
