HMS Bounty
HMS Bounty – The Famous Ship that Inspired the Coin

  Key Features:

  • .9999 pure silver.
  • Value supported by The Cook Islands government (face value: $1).
  • Obverse depiction: Queen Elizabeth II as rendered by artist Ian Rank-Broadley.
  • Reverse depiction: HMS Bounty sailing.

The image of the HMS Bounty is one of the most classic representations of the golden age of sailing. It was first commissioned and constructed in 1784 as a merchant vessel by the British government. After being transferred to the Royal British Navy, the ship made a single voyage. Since then, it has become an icon for people interested in this unique historical period. The concept of large wooden sailboats like these is largely dead in a practical sense; these images now have become symbolic of an age of pirateering and classic ship battles.    On the reverse side of the coin, this ship lives again on the brilliant silver face. It is intricately designed, with each of its many sails shown in great detail. Savvy onlookers can even make out the flag of Great Britain, which is shown hanging off the top right side of the ship’s sail configuration. The security wave pattern in the background of the design gives the sense that the ship is cruising through the ocean. The face value (one dollar), weight, and purity of the coin are also shown on this face.    Unsurprisingly, a familiar image of the Queen of England makes an appearance on the obverse of the 2020 Cook Islands 1 Oz Silver HMS Bounty Coin. Many different depictions of the Queen exist. Here, we have the effigy of Elizabeth II designed by artist Ian Rank-Broadley for the British Royal Mint. The 1988 design shows the bust of a relatively young Queen, making this coin a unique historical depiction of the famed monarch.  Adorned with two classic images, one of Queen Elizabeth II and another of the renowned HMS Bounty sailing vessel, the 2020 Cook Islands 1 Oz Silver HMS Bounty Coin provides collectors with a unique look into the history of Great Britain. Its high purity and backing by The Cook Islands only further demonstrates its value as a genuine silver product.
