History: The 1 oz Platinum Maple Leaf was first struck in September of 1988. Because of the vast popularity and success of its gold counterpart, the Royal Canadian Mint decided to produce silver and platinum alternatives. In that year, the RCM ranked third in platinum production, trailing only to South Africa and the former Soviet Union. The RCM halted the production of the Platinum Maple in 2002, due to a decrease in demand. However, they revived the series in 2009, this time featuring an obverse design modified by Susanna Blunt in 2003. In 2012, the 1 oz Platinum Maple Leaf was considered to be the best selling platinum coin in the world. Its popularity continues today.

The Mint itself has a deep, rich history. While the first Canadian coins were originally struck in parts of England, the Royal Mint was officially founded in Ottawa in 1908, thanks to the patronage of a handful of British noblemen and women. As the Mint continued to grow, it became overworked and antiquated, but it was not until 1976 that RCM opened the Winnipeg branch. Although discussions for this second offshoot began in the early 1960s, the project was unable to move forward due to political tensions and disagreements. After the strain had settled, and the Winnipeg facility finally opened its doors, the Royal Canadian Mint swiftly began to rise in popularity, building the reputation of excellence it holds to this day. The RCM continues to be one of the most renowned and celebrated mints in the world, producing billions of coins every year for over sixty countries worldwide.

Design: In comparison to some of its other 1 oz competitors, the Canadian Platinum Maple has kept a steady design since its inception in the later 1980s. The obverse features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, last updated in 2003. The original effigy was designed by British artist, sculptor and designer Arnold Machin. The image was also used on some New Zealand and Australian currency. Her majesty faces to the right, with “Elizabeth II”, “50 Dollars” and the year “2020” additionally engraved. All 2020 coins will feature the latest portrait of Queen Elizabeth.

The reverse image features the namesake of the coin and Canada’s national symbol, the maple leaf. The recognition of the maple leaf as a Canadian symbol can be traced back to early explorers who settled near the St. Lawrence River in the mid-19th century. The settlement eventually became what we know as modern-day Montreal. In 1834, Montreal’s first mayor, Jacques Viger, lauded the maple leaf as “the king of the forest”. Since then, it has been an iconic symbol that continues to be a large part of Canadian culture. Inscriptions on the reverse include the word “Canada” as well as the coin’s weight, purity and content.

Composition: The standard 1 ounce Canadian Maple Leaf is composed of .9995 pure platinum. Each coin is 30 mm in diameter with reeded edges. As always, the purity, weight and composition of all Gold Maples are assured by the Canadian Government.

Packaging Info: Purchased individually, each Canadian Maple Leaf will arrive in standard, protective flips for your convenience.
