History of the Gold Maple Leaf Coin

First issued in 1979 by the Royal Canadian Mint, the 1 oz Gold Maple was the second gold bullion coin to be recognized worldwide, trailing only to South Africa’s Gold Krugerrand. The original concept of the Maple Leaf was brainstormed by Walter Ott, who wanted to create an alternative to the Krugerrand. One year later, and Ott’s vision became a reality, with the Maple Leaf quickly becoming a symbol of national pride and solidarity. The original obverse design, released in 1979, features a young Elizabeth II, at age 39. The image remained until 1990, when it was replaced with a 64-year-old Elizabeth, and 15 years later, a nearly 80-year-old portrait of her majesty. The 2005 update remains as the current, standard design. Although originally introduced with a purity of 99.9%, the Royal Canadian Mint raised that purity to 99.99% in 1982, introducing a number of sizes and denominations in the following decades. Many special edition and anniversary coins were minted, commemorating the grandeur and success the collection had garnered.

The 2020 Canadian Gold Maple Design

In contrast with other 1 oz gold coins produced throughout the world, the Canadian Gold Maple has kept a fairly similar design over the years. The obverse features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, last updated in 2005, and originally designed by British artist, sculptor and designer Arnold Machin. Machin’s image can additionally be seen on currency produced in New Zealand and Australia in the mid-late 1980s. “Elizabeth II”, “50 Dollars” and the year “2020” are all engraved.  The reverse image features the maple leaf, a symbol that many easily identify as Canada’s national symbol. The significance of the maple leaf can be traced back to the early 19th century, when French Canadian explorers were first settling the area. In a place that is now modern-day Montreal, the maple leaf was lauded by settlers as the most majestic foliage in the forest. Since that time, it has continued to be the iconic symbol of pride and solidarity. Reverse inscriptions include the word “Canada” in addition to the coin’s weight, content and purity. In 2013, the Royal Canadian Mint added a privy mark that is micro-inscribed with the last two digits of the minted year in order to prevent counterfeit and protect the coin’s authenticity. Additionally, radial lines were added in 2015, to further security measures.

Composition of the 2020 Canadian Gold Maple

With its debut in 1979, the Gold Maple originally had a purity of .999. However, any coin in the collection minted after 1982 is guaranteed to have a 99.99% gold content. This makes it one of the purest forms of gold bullion in the world. The weight and content of each Maple Leaf is guaranteed by the Canadian Government.
