History of American Gold Buffalo Coins

The American Gold Buffalo was minted in the summer of 2006, after the passage of the Presidential $1 Coin Act of 2005 (Public Law 109-145).

Under this law, the government was able to start producing 24-karat bullion gold coin options, as a way to keep up with countries like China and Canada, who already had a head start.

This was the first occasion that the U.S. Mint produced a .9999 fine gold coin for the public to buy.

The act additionally stipulated certain guidelines about the coin’s production, such as volume, price, legal tender status, gold sourcing and more.

The 2020 American Gold Buffalo is a historic reminder of James Earle Fraser’s artwork, which first debuted on the Indian Head nickel in 1913.

His design continues to be held in high esteem and is considered one of the best of any coin produced in the United States.

2020 Gold Buffalo Design

The design of the 2020 American Gold Buffalo coin is one that has a rich and remarkable history. It serves as a direct modification of an earlier design, created by James Earle Fraser, that was used on the Indian Head nickel in 1913.

The obverse shows a Native American chieftain, an icon that is recognizable to most coin connoisseurs. Fraser modeled his sketch after three Native American chieftains with whom he personally met: Chief Iron Tail, Chief Two Moons and Chief Big Tree.

These three individuals all posed for Fraser in the early 20th century, unknowingly becoming a large part of bullion history.

The word “Liberty”, the mint mark and the year “2020” are additionally engraved.

The reverse, featuring an American buffalo, is also designed by Fraser. Some accounts state that Fraser was inspired by Black Diamond, one of the largest buffalos in captivity, who was housed at New York’s Central Park Zoo.

Others believe his muse was Bronx, another bison, situated at the rival Bronx Zoo, also in New York.

This iconic imagery continues to be one of the most recognizable designs across the country.

“United States of America”, “E Pluribus Unum”, “In God We Trust” are inscribed, as well as the weight, purity and face value.

With the release of the American Gold Buffalo 1 oz coin in 2006, Deputy Director David A. Lebryk noted in a press release that “these classic and beautiful American Indian and Buffalo designs by James Earle Fraser, which have been American favorites since they were first used in 1913, recall a golden age of coin artistry.”

The obverse and reverse designs continue to be a nostalgic reminder of the early roots of American coinage.
